So I recently made the jump from the chrome and google search to Brave and DuckDuckGo. You can read about my Brave post here, overall I’m really enjoying the browser. These are my initial thoughts on the DuckDuckGo search engine.
DuckDuckGo kind of sucks. The main issue with DuckDuckGo is also its biggest benefit. The main benefit is that it never stores any user information. It gives privacy back to the user. In the age of user data collection, this is big pro for privacy minded users. It’s personally why I chose to use it.
The privacy is a double edged sword. Google any restaurant, and Google will be able to locate the restaurant that you are looking for based on location. DuckDuckGo can’t do that, it’s protecting your privacy! It doesn’t reveal your location so it doesn’t know what you are actually close to. It does suck, but its not the end of the world to type google maps when searching for something.
That’s pretty much the main difference that I’ve noticed. It’s not bad. The UI and layout are pretty similar to Google. The speed is also comparable to google, there is not much of a notable difference. If you make typos, it can pretty reliably guess what you were trying to search. It displays similar results to Google. Image and video searching work very well as well. I think I will be sticking with it for now!
